Network Host - Sunderland CVS
Over
the last 100 years, a network has developed, of organisations which
describe themselves as Councils for Voluntary Services (CVS). It recognises
that CVS reflect local need and are diverse in nature, whilst having
a common base of values, functions and structures.
The first CVS was founded at the end of the 19th century.
Its aim was to co-ordinate voluntary effort and promote new organisations
to fill gaps in local services.
The Benefits of a CVS
Every area involves a variety of voluntary action without which
many activities and services would not exist. Over the years,
CVS's have been established in order to:
- Co-ordinate voluntary action
- Promote the establishment of new organisations to fill gaps
in local services and meet new needs
- Provide services to support the local voluntary and community
sector
- Act as an advocate for, and enable representation by, the sector
- Act as a strategic partner for the sector
- Develop an infrastructure in order to give the voluntary sector
stability, support, visibility and status.

Training and Development
To determine the combined training needs of the VCS within Sunderland a consultation exercise was undertaken. The exercise took place between 23/11/06 – 26/01/07 and employed a variety of techniques including – questionnaires, face to face interviews and telephone interviews.
A total of 110 voluntary community sector organisations were invited to participate with 84 responding (response rate 76% approximately). A total of 133 questionnaires were returned and 30 informal interviews undertaken.
The consultation highlighted 56 areas of training (38 from a pre-determined list and 18 further areas identified via a ‘catch-all’ box). A final report was produced and circulated in March 2007.
The results of this consultation were used to influence delivery of the project. A traffic light system was introduced against the 15 most requested areas of training, namely.
