Jeanette Harold, Network Coordinator - Dear Member, At our recent delegates meeting it was intended that Lee would hold a workshop in respect of the national Outcome and Indicator Set. As we had many questions for Lee we did not get to this. I pointed out that I had already sent out the information to members so that they could undertake their own workshop and forward their groups priorities. Some members felt that as lone workers they would not be able to participate in this and we discussed trying to fit something in to our meeting on the 13th. We already have a speaker for this date and a workshop to respond to the Community Action Plan questions. We thought we might do something in the afternoon, but several members said that an afternoon session would conflict with other calls on their time.

Having had time to think about this, we already identified our priorities as a network in August and set them against our thematic partnerships of Healthy City, Prosperous City, Learning City, Safe and Inclusive City and Livable City. It seems more appropriate that we look at the indicators and see where our priorities fit than embark on yet another round of consultation. The National Indicators do not fall into the thematic groups we have so I have jigged them around and if anyone has any objections to where they sit please get back to me. I attach the briefing letter, appendix A which were our identified priorities and Appendix B which is the National Indicators.

Regards, Jeanette

New Working Neighbourhoods Fund

The Government has announced the areas in England that will receive a share of the new Working Neighbourhoods Fund. Sixty-six local and twenty-one transitional authorities will receive allocations over the next three years totaling over £450 million in 2008/09, and £500 million in 2009/10 and 2010/11.

The Fund is a new, dedicated fund for local councils and communities to develop more concentrated, concerted, community-led approaches to getting people in the most deprived areas of England back to work. It replaces the existing Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and incorporates the Department for Work and Pension's Deprived Areas Fund to create a single local fund.

At least £50 million of the £1.5 billion Fund will be available as a reward fund which will go to areas that have made good progress over the first two years on tackling worklessness and improving enterprise levels.

Individual local authority allocations are listed in the attached, together with the narrative from DCLG. Additional info is on the website of the Department for Communities and Local Government: www.communities.gov.uk

A690 LogoThe A690 Youth Initiative Launches 'THE CAGE'

The cage is a portable metal enclosure, designed to allow young people to play 2 on 2 touch football. The 'Cage' can be erected in various locations where there is restricted or no youth facilities available. In March of this year, in partnership with 'Wearside Youth 4 Christ, The A690 introduced the 'Cage' to the area and over a one week period it attracted over 200 young people. As this was a huge success the A690 applied for and were successful in raising funds from various trust and charities,to commission the production of their own 'Cage' and to develop and deliver a full programme of cage activities for the young people from across the areas. The A690’s new ‘Cage’ was officially launched on Wednesday 28th November.

Do you need Volunteers for 2008?

Business in the Communities employee volunteering scheme, North East Cares, is looking for new volunteering opportunity's for team challenges in 2008. Team challenges can be any volunteering opportunity which a team of volunteers can complete in a day which has a benefit to both the team and the community partner involved.

Our member companies are based throughout the North East and take part in a number of volunteering activities. Projects in the last year have included

60 volunteers from Yorkshire Bank getting there hands dirty at Mencap's Dilston College. Working on path laying, raised flower beds and a drainage ditch.
30 volunteers from Eversheds LLP and DTZ painting a number of rooms and working on the garden at the Linskill Centre in North Shields.
15 volunteers from Sage helping out with the maintenance of the Pets Corner in Jesmond Dene, Newcastle.
12 volunteers from the Co-Op group building rabbit hutches for the Owten Fens Community Association in Hartlepool
18 volunteers from the Gentoo Group sprucing up a memorial garden and painting classrooms for Portland School in Sunderland.
Team challenges are generally one day challenges for around 12 volunteers and can be ANY feasible challenge which can be completed in that time - the more imaginative the better! Each team is headed up by at least 1 team leader who will liaise with the community partner to ensure the day is a WIN WIN for both parties.

If you or any group you work with have need for such a challenge than please get in touch with Michelle Brannen at Business in the Community on 0191 487 7799 for more information. We are looking to set out a list of events for throughout the whole of 2008 so please get in touch with your calendar of activities.
